Navigating the speed interview
By Sarah Collins
If you score sufficiently at shortlisting then you will be invited to complete the fitness and strength tests and speed interviews.
You will be notified via email around the 27th April 2020 so please ensure that you are regularly monitoring your inbox, junk and spam folders.
The series of selection tests are held over one day and there will be several dates available to book via Eventbrite.
On the day of your selection tests, if you pass both the Fitness and Strength tests then you will proceed to the speed interview stage
What is a speed interview?
This element of the selection process has been designed to find out more about you. What motivated you to apply for this role and understanding what you know about the role of a Firefighter.
It is a chance for you to demonstrate what you know about the role of a Firefighter and how your skills and experience match this role and why you could be a good fit for this role.
You will have 10 minutes with a member of staff after completing the physical tests.
Within these 10 minutes, the same questions are asked to all candidates to demonstrate fairness and consistency. Our interviewers will do their best to ensure that you feel relaxed and are able to perform well.
We are unable to exceed the 10-minute time limit. This must be adhered to for all candidates.
What should I wear?
As you would have completed the Fitness and Strength tests we are happy for you to stay in your gym kit. Please wear whatever you feel comfortable in.
How can I prepare for a speed interview?
We encourage you to review the role of a Firefighter using all of the information available on our Yes You Can website.
It is essential that you have a sound understanding of this role and the skills and qualities required. It may be helpful to list your current experience, skills and qualities and cross-reference them to the role of a Firefighter providing examples where relevant.
On the day of your speed interview, please ensure that you listen carefully to the questions asked. The speed interview is only for 10 minutes so it is essential that you provide us with as much relevant information as possible, this is an extremely competitive process with a vast amount of applications and only a limited number of vacancies.
When will I be notified of my results?
It is anticipated that you will be notified of your outcome w/c 13th May 2020.
If you have scored sufficiently, then you will proceed to the next stage of the selection process which is the physical test stage.
You will be notified via email, so please ensure that you check your inbox and also your junk and spam folders.
Will feedback be given?
Due to the vast amount of applications received and the limited resources within our Human Resources department, we are unable to provide individual feedback.
