avon fire recruitment awareness event - bristol

Bath College

City Centre Campus
Avon Street

Date: Sunday 7 January 2018
Time: 10:00am - 4:00pm

At Avon Fire & Rescue Service we think it’s important our workforce is representative of the communities we serve. At the moment only 4.9% of our fulltime, known as wholetime, firefighters are women and 4.4% from black and minority ethnic backgrounds – both well below the averages in our area. During this recruitment campaign we are taking specific steps to raise awareness of firefighting as career among the groups currently under represented in our workforce.

One of these will be through recruitment awareness events which will provide the opportunity for women and people from black and minority ethnic backgrounds to learn more about why being a firefighter could be a job for them.

At the event there will be the opportunity to speak to current members of our staff and:

  • Learn more about our work in the community to reduce the risk of fires and other emergencies;
  • Get some advice on questions you might have about what it’s like to work as a firefighter;
  • Find out more about the level of fitness you would need to be a firefighter;
  • Meet with a member of our Human Resource (HR) team to chat about working with us; and
  • Have the opportunity to see and use some of our equipment and protective clothing.

The awareness days are not part of the application process and have been arranged to provide an insight into the work of the fire and rescue service to under-represented groups, although no one will be turned away. It’s important to remember that once an application has been made selection is based entirely based on merit.
